So I’ve been dabbling with coloring the Mourning Star characters lately. It’s something I’ve been dragging my feet about pretty much from inception of the series. The interior art has always been black & white, the only hint of color were the electric colored covers…I love the feeling of the covers. But if I were to color the interior, should I stick with that kind of palette? Although I always kinda knew what I felt the cast of characters being, I was scared to establish what colors dudes were, in fear of weirding out readers.

Being in a post-apocalyptic setting, naturally I imagined their world being full of grime and debris. Lots of grey and brown. The air could be a tan orange or murky blue grey, the clouds a snowy light yellow. Anything and everything that was colorful, now faded and muted due to the Heaven Star catastrophe. I thought if I were to ever do a color version, I’d just make the pages different hues of grey, brown and orange. Or with a gritty classic tintype look to it.

Kinda like a Brothers Quay video. It would probably be the complete opposite of what the covers portrayed. If not like that, something muted and overcast like this

I don’t know. Anyway, I gotta run some errands… If anybody reading this has any opinions or thoughts on the matter, I’d love to hear them!  Here’s some colored sketches of a few characters. It’s not set in stone,  just playing around…

PS: I think the Snipper Sniper is orange…?

SHEEEET. I gotta month left to draw the rest of Mourning Star #3 before going back to work! Every minute away from the drawing table feels like THIS

More new news soon. Something I’m really excited about! Come back and I’ll have some sketchbook pages posted.

If you’re in the San Fransisco area and love video games or are visiting for the GDC (Game Developers Conference), be sure to check out Giant Robot SF’s third annual GAME OVER/CONTINUE show this weekend.
This year I submitted an interactive piece based off of one of my all time favorite NES classics: IKARI WARRIORS. It’s a wall mounted 3D replica of the title screen. Viewers can twist the knob on the underside of the frame and make the Ikari warriors turn outward and make a little ticking noise (simulating machine gun fire). It’s made out of painted wood and plaster inside a shadow box type frame.
Looks like there’s lots of great stuff up for sale. Wish I could be there!
